Wine education in Port Alfred

I spent the past three days in the sleepy town of Port Alfred, located an hour and a half from Port Elizabeth.  Before last week, I had no idea that an educational institution existed in the town.  Stenden South Africa is a satellite campus of Stenden in Leeuwarden, Netherlands and is the only tertiary institution in South Africa to offer a degree in hospitality management.

I was invited to Stenden as a guest wine lecturer and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.  Going into an unknown environment I was not sure what would be waiting for me.  I was impressed by the attitude of the students and their willingness to learn created a positive learning environment.  It was fantastic to witness growth in learning, as students progressed from one-word answers to writing analytical tasting notes.  I found this to be most rewarding and one of the key reasons why I love teaching.

The students I taught were all Dutch and looking at the many blonde heads that were on campus, coupled with the Indian Ocean in the background, it struck me how naturally they all fitted into the sea-side postcard picture I had in my mind.  No surprise so many students were addicted to surfing.

Back in Cape Town and I am finalising my lecturing schedule at Stenden for next month.  Seems it’s not just surfing they are addicted to now…
