Athule Kamanga with Amanda Barker, CWA course co-ordinator

Last night I lectured for the Cape Wine Academy at the River Club in Observatory.  Upon arrival I was introduced to a young man, who had apparently been on-site since 2pm, fours hours before the scheduled lecture.  This young man looked at me and said, “I know you!  I met you at the Decanter stand during Cape Wine 2008, at the CTICC”.

I was overcome with emotion since I remember Athule Kamanga approaching me at the Decanter stand and asking one simple question: “how can I get involved in wine?”  My heart went out to him that day and I promised myself I would somehow find a way for Athule to enter the world of wine.  Unfortunately life interrupted my plans late in 2008 and as time went on I lost contact with Athule.  I had often wondered what had become of this enthusiastic young man. So how was it that Athule stood before me, this time as a student enrolled for his first wine course?  He had attended the Gugulethu Wine Festival in May and won a CWA wine course in a raffle!  A sure sign that he was meant to become involved in wine and follow his passion for wine.  Go for it Athule!

Never stop dreaming…
