When it comes to SA wines entered this year virtually every letter of the alphabet was represented, from Anura to Zoetendal Wines. It is fantastic to see the rise in entries, close on 680 wines this year and no doubt Cape Wine 2008 created the necessary platform for trade networking.
With entry fees ranging between £90 – £100, depending on whether registration was done on-line and within a set date, South Africa alone has contributed between £61,200 – £68,000! Not bad going and overall Decanter magazine will be proud of being the largest wine competition with 10,285 entered. While it is a collaborative team effort at Decanter, Tastings Director, Christelle Guibert, should be applauded for her unfailing dedication to this competition, now in its sixth year.Â
This year saw John Avery MW chair the SA panel of judges and included fellow MW’s, Cathy van Zyl, Simon Thorpe and Lynne Sherriff and South African Cape Wine Master,Vashti Galpin who was joined by Fiona MacDonald.
Entries ranged from KWV, Boschendal, Constellation to medium and small enterprises like La Vierge Wines, located in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley.Â
