In March 2007 I had the pleasure of conducting a site inspection over several days with Pam Rathke, owner of African Art Tours, based in Colorado, USA.Â
Pam’s enthusiasm for Africa and approach to learning meant that I could take her off the beaten track and introduce her to people and places most South Africans are yet to see.Â
On one particular day I suggested Eziko Cooking school in Langa. I explained how I had recently conducted a Basic Wine Course on behalf of the Cape Wine Academy and that the enthusiasm and desire to learn had led me to want to commit to these students on a more permanent basis. Pam was very interested in visiting and we headed there as our first stop on a particular day.
When Pam returned in September with a tour group party we included Eziko in their itinerary with a lunch stop. The students at Eziko study fulltime for six months and after qualifying they are placed in kitchens at Winchester Mansions and Grand West Casino. Every single student is placed in fulltime employment at the end of their training.
The visit in September led to a donation of R2,760.00 to the school. This donation will cover one student’s enrolment fee to the school and tuition for sixteen students in wine education.Â
