The Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show, South Africa’s most respected national wine competition, celebrates a decade of bringing the best wines to the South African wine consumer. These popular single-night annual wine tastings give wine lovers the chance to taste more than 130 wines – the most ever to have achieved Silver, Gold or Trophy medal status in the history of the competition. Highlights of the show are the unveiling of the Most Successful Producer and the Discovery of the Show, which culminated from the judging of 1 062 wines from a range of 43 classes of entry.
The list of wines and producers in attendance at the public tastings are kept under wraps until 1 June when the full results of the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show 2011 are announced. All wines present at the tastings can be ordered at special deal prices on the night. Achieving an Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show medal is a significant accolade thanks to the intense scrutiny that each wine entry is subjected to by a panel of nine judges comprising international and local expertise.
Said Michael Fridjhon, chairman of the judging panel: “The past decade has seen extraordinary changes at the top end of the South African wine industry and the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show played an important role in discovering new talent and showcasing this achievement. The increase particularly amongst the silver and bronze medalists is a clear indication of the dramatic improvement in the average quality of the entries”.
